David Hey My thanks to John Parker for his generous assistance in the compilation of this page Like it or not, the ageing process gathers momentum at an alarming rate as you get older; by the time you reach the ‘Big Six-‘0’ the years are flying by! One of the best ways I’ve found to occupy retirement is to lose myself in those things that resonate most from childhood. I’m harking back to a more innocent age when countless thousands of youngsters with notebooks and pencils gathered on station platforms to collect engine numbers.
All things considered train spotting became the national hobby for boys on a truly epic scale; it embraced a whole range of ‘Boys Own’ adventures that today’s mamby-pamby society would view with a large dollop of suspended disbelief! This is why I wanted to launch a website on the subject, though I had no idea where it might lead.
Well, having started the ball rolling in the site has just grown and grown.
York is a historic walled city in North Yorkshire, the confluence of the River Ouse and Foss, it is the traditional county town of the historic county of Yorkshire. York Minster and a variety of cultural and sporting activities make it a popular tourist destination.. The city was founded by the Romans as Eboracum in 71 AD. It became the capital of the Roman province of Britannia.
Welsh -og meaning either “place of the yew trees” cf. The top half is medieval. By the time of the Roman conquest of Britain , the area was occupied by a tribe known to the Romans as the Brigantes. The Brigantian tribal area initially became a Roman client state, but later its leaders became more hostile and the Roman Ninth Legion was sent north of the Humber into Brigantian territory.
The site of the principia HQ of the fortress lies under the foundations of York Minster , and excavations in the undercroft have revealed part of the Roman structure and columns. Under Viking rule the city became a major river port, part of the extensive Viking trading routes throughout northern Europe. Initially they were successful, but upon the arrival of William the Conqueror the rebellion was put down.

From large-scale dressing up, to memorabilia collections and giant food, Yorkshire has its fair share of bizarre Guinness World Record successes to its name. The largest space hopper race Sheffield bounced into the world record books in , when participants took part in the largest space hopper race at the Don Valley Grass Bowl. The world’s largest onion bhaji weighed The world’s smallest nightclub Dubbed ‘Club 28’, Gerard Jenkins-Omar and Stephen Robson achieved the record for the world’s smallest nightclub after unveiling their creation at the first ever Rotherham Carnival in The box measured just 2.
The tube is lightweight and highly portable and provides water on demand, on site. There were many things we liked about it, but one of the things that really impressed us was the way it dealt with the different water pressures one has to cope with, so th.
Each and every one of us will have at one time or another experienced the ebb and flow in our passion for trains and railways, whether it be an allegiance to steam or a penchant for more modern diesel and electric traction…in essence, the appeal of trains frequently comes and goes, but it never leaves us entirely. Terry’s fascination with trains began in the West Riding of Yorkshire during the s when the majority of small boys shared a passion for train spotting.
It started off as a relatively simple hobby at first, little morethan jotting down a few engine numbers at his local station at Saltaire near Shipley until it dawned on him that spotting the same old engines time and time again was a fruitless exercise and a wider search began in earnest. His parents were badgered for permission to travel further afield, but wisely no mention was made of the hairy escapades his trips involved, often pedalling mile upon mile on push bikes to faraway places and climbing over perimeter walls to gain access to engine sheds.
Alas, by the mid s our search for engine numbers took an ominous downturn and our spotting trips were returning fewer rewards than previous times, not least because collecting engine numbers was a speculative pursuit where success was measured by the sum total of ‘cops’ collected. Now you don’t have to be a mathematician to calculate the odds of adding more numbers to your collection when the rank and file of BR steam was being culled at an alarming rate.

That fateful year, all nine-and-a-half centuries ago, was a pivotal moment in the history of Britain — the context, as it was, for the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest. Last month, the th anniversary of the Battle of Stamford Bridge — a chainmail contest which was just as crucial in a bloody narrative of ambition, rivalry and armed intrigue as the headline event in East Sussex — passed almost unnoticed.
Stamford Bridge took place 19 days before Hastings Credit: Harold did not just have William for an enemy. He could also count on the Norwegian ruler Harald Hardrada, plus his own scheming brother Tostig, as men who wanted to unseat him.

The ZF Reliance remains my favourite but the RE was a revelation and started my “love affair” with the marque and model both as passenger and as driver. A magic carpet ride and smoothly quiet. With the others, there were obvious differences, but why was the example above not a full CRG??? If they had full destination blinds including number boxes and powered folding doors, then they were designated DP express. If they had a single piece coach door and small destination blinds without number box they were designated Coaches.
The only difference between them and any other Fanfare produced is the full destination display — including number box. As an operator friend of mine once said, “I want professional drivers, not steering wheel attendants. The gap between ratios on 2nd and 3rd gears was always far more noticeable on the Leyland Leopard, though. In I went from Salisbury to Swindon for the purposes of a vasectomy. The deed was done and I caught the service bus home. Despite a dose of aspirin and decent suspension I felt every bump!

Spare some change for the BNP? Let it not be said that here at Sump we’re afraid to tackle a little controversy. In fact, we love it, especially when it comes from the British National Party; the party that everyone loves to hate—or is that hates to love? To that end, we’ve just received a press release from BNP chairman Nick Griffin complete with an attached begging bowl seeking funds.

Lambeth Council redefines potholes When is a pothole not a pothole? When the local authority says it is, and that depends on how much dosh is in the kitty. Lambeth Council in London, for instance, used to take responsibility and fill ’em in when they had a depth of at least 0. But now they won’t spread the asphalt until the hole has turned into a crater at least 1. And that means that your claim for suspension damage to your classic heap is likely to be rejected if you can’t meet the new rules.
Of course, you personally don’t subscribe to the modern compensation culture and don’t hold out your hand for every grievance that comes your way. You’re not that kind of guy. Then again, you’ve paid for your share of the road and have a right to expect value for money. But with the goalposts shifted, you could find yourself more easily shafted. So why the move? So the simple answer is to rewrite the rules. It’s worth mentioning that this has been going on for a long time, and that different councils apply different rules.
